Flowering Almond Shrub (Prunus triloba)
Ornamental almond trees bear flowers in springtime. The five-petal blooms of this lovely flowering shrub may be either white or pink, and roughly 1½ to 2 inches in diameter. Some flowering almond blossoms may be double headed. The medium-green leaves of the flowering almond shrub have an elongated oval shape, and finely toothed edges. Some flowering almond varieties show autumn color, usually yellow, and then drop away. The flowering almond shrub is ideal in the garden or simply near the house. Planted in a row, flowering almonds will create an attractive shrub border along a path, patio or property line. Flowering almond dwarf trees make wonderful additions to rock gardens. Care of flowering almond shrubsShrubs and young flowering almond trees do not usually need watering a part from when they are first planted, when there is a drought, and in late autumn before the ground freezes for the winter. Feed them only once a year and prune heavily immediately after they bloom in the spring. A 2-3 inch layer of some attractive organic material spread on the soil over the roots of flowering almond shrubs protects them. It maintains the soil's moisture, discourages weeds and shields the flowering almond shrubs from injury by mechanical garden-care equipment. Use wood chips, chopped leaves (not whole), shredded bark or pine needles. |
